How to Answer WAEC English Essay Questions: The A1 Template I Used

If you’re reading this, WAEC English Essay is probably stressing you. It’s 50 marks. That’s the difference between C6 and A1. Most students fail it because they “write vibes” instead of using WAEC’s marking guide.

I went from C6 to A1 using this exact template. No big grammar. Just structure. Here’s how you copy it.

1. WAEC Marks Essays in 3 Ways — Know This First

WAEC gives marks like this: Content = 10 marks, Organization = 10 marks, Expression = 20 marks, Mechanical Accuracy = 10 marks.

Content means did you answer the question fully? Organization means is it neat with paragraphs and linking words? Expression means simple, clear English with few errors. Mechanical Accuracy means spelling, punctuation, and tenses are correct.

A1 secret: Score 7 out of 10 in Content and Organization, plus 15 out of 20 in Expression. That’s 39 out of 50 = A1.

2. The 5-Paragraph A1 Template That Works Every Time
This works for Letter, Article, Speech, Narrative, and Descriptive essays.

Paragraph 1: Introduction — 3 sentences max
Sentence 1: Define or restate the topic in your words.
Sentence 2: State your stand or main point.
Sentence 3: Tell WAEC what you’ll discuss.

Example for “Write an article on causes of exam malpractice”: 
Exam malpractice is the act of cheating during exams to get grades one doesn’t deserve. It is destroying Nigeria’s education system. This article will discuss three major causes: poor preparation, fear of failure, and lack of strict supervision.

Paragraph 2 to 4: Body — 1 point per paragraph
Use this formula for each: Point + Explain + Example.

Point: One major cause is poor preparation.
Explain: Many students wait until exam week to read. Without time to understand, they panic and cheat.
Example: For instance, a student who never attends Math class will likely copy in WAEC Math.

Do that for 3 points. Use linkers like Firstly, Secondly, In addition, Lastly.

Paragraph 5: Conclusion — 3 sentences max
Sentence 1: Restate the topic. In conclusion, exam malpractice is a serious issue.
Sentence 2: Summarize your 3 points. Poor preparation, fear, and weak supervision cause it.
Sentence 3: Give advice or a solution. Students should study early and schools must install CCTV in halls.

3. 4 Mistakes That Turn A1 to C6 Instantly

First: No paragraphs. WAEC gives you 0 in Organization if you write one block of text.
Second: Big grammar with wrong tense. Don’t write “I have went”. Use simple past: “I went”.
Third: Going off-point. If the question says “causes” and you write “effects”, you fail. Read twice.
Fourth: No examples. WAEC wants proof you understand. No example means no marks.

4. My 3 Exam Day Hacks

One: Pick the question you have 3 points for. Don’t pick “best friend” if you can only write 1 paragraph.
Two: Spend 5 minutes planning. Jot 3 points and 1 example each. Writing is faster after.
Three: Write 350 to 400 words. Too short means you didn’t explain. Too long means more errors.
