1. He’s doubling down after Obi’s ₦5bn lawsuit threat
Okonkwo first made the bribery claims on Channels TV _Sunrise Daily_ June 8, 2026. He alleged Obi + NDC South-East leaders demanded ₦10m from House of Reps aspirants and ₦20m from Senate aspirants. 

Obi’s lawyers responded June 9 with a letter: retract in 7 days, public apology, pay ₦5bn damages, or face court. They called the claims “false, baseless, malicious, defamatory”. 

Okonkwo’s response? Release WhatsApp chats on X and say “sue me”. He’s basically saying: _I’m not backing down. Here’s my evidence._ 

2. He claims he has receipts from an aspirant
Okonkwo says his source is Obunike Ohaegbu, an NDC House of Reps aspirant for Nnewi North/South/Ekwusigo. 

According to Okonkwo, when Ohaegbu asked the NDC who authorized the extra ₦10m/₦20m fees, “the party named Peter Obi and the caucus leaders who were assembled by Peter Obi”. 

He also shared chat logs where Ohaegbu allegedly said: “Peter Obi is the head, stomach, and feet of the criminal gang”. Okonkwo claims Obi compiled candidate lists from John Wood Hotel, Abuja, including people who lost primaries like Senator Victor Umeh. 

3. Political fallout + personal beef
Okonkwo was Obi’s spokesperson during the 2023 campaign. He’s now a chieftain of the ADC. He says he spent his own money on flights/hotels for Obi’s campaign. 

After Obi’s legal threat, Okonkwo posted: “If Peter Obi is looking for money to campaign, he should privately ask me for assistance, not come from extortion”. He also warned: “Anyone who decides to sue his former Spokesperson for defamation is indeed very unwise”. 

He claims he’s holding back worse info “to preserve the remaining of Peter Obi’s tattered reputation”. 

The Compass take: This is a high-stakes credibility war.
- If Okonkwo is lying: ₦5bn lawsuit + criminal defamation. Career suicide.
- If Obi’s camp is lying: It confirms the “structure” politics young Nigerians hate.
